Cybersecurity Tip

Never leave your devices unlocked and unattended. When you need to leave your device for any period of time—no matter how short—lock it up so no one can access it while you’re gone. For those of us who have access to student personally identifiable information on portable devices like a flash drive or external hard drive, make sure to lock it up as well. Keep your information and our students information safe!

SFUSD and the 1 Million Project

As the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) moves closer to achieving Vision 2025 and becoming a truly Digital District, increasingly more assignments will require 24/7 Internet access. However, there are still students within the District who do not have adequate Internet access at home. In support of these students, the Department of Technology (DoT) is excited to announce SFUSD has partnered with the 1Million Project (1MP).

The 1Million Project will provide to eligible SFUSD students free, portable hotspot devices with 10GB of high-speed LTE data and 2G of unlimited connectivity after 10GB of usage. SFUSD currently has 875 hotspots to be distributed to students at a first-come-first-served basis. There may be future opportunities for SFUSD to receive more hotspots if there is sufficient demand.

Tech Advisor: Techquity, Cell Phones in School

According to the SFUSD Student and Family Handbook the district cell phone policy is off and away during instructional time, and the enforcement of this policy may look different at each school community. In our quick paced digital world we are looking to support students in finding balance with technology and their own well being. This was our focus for Digital Citizenship week in October and continues to be a priority throughout our work.

In service of these efforts last month DoT, along with the Student, Family and Community Support Department (SFCSD), premiered Screenagers: NEXT CHAPTER at Herbert Hoover Middle School. This new film examines the science behind teen’s emotional challenges, the role of social media in their lives, and, most importantly, addresses how schools and families can help teens build the skills and mindsets they need to thrive in the digital age. Following the film, there was a Q&A with the producer, Lisa Tabb, and SFUSD leadership where parents were able to inquire about their wonderings and find practical next steps.
